Best Reason to Postpone a Trial Date, Part 3

“Tis the season: it’s the time of year to get court continuances based on football games. It happened in ’09, it happened in 2010, and this year, a judge in Florida is trying to get the jump on Motions to Continue by just dealing with the issue now:

[T]he Motion [to continue] is granted . . . in light of the upcoming holidays, including Hanukkah, Christmas, New Years’ Day, Three Kings Day, the Bowl Championship Series game, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Court grants an enlargement of time for all Defendants . . . ” (from the Southern District of Florida, Miami Division).

I know the BCS is treated as a super-holiday in my house, but this is the first time I’ve seen it given that status in court. Note to office staff:  We’re still open on Monday January 7, 2013.
